Stephen Daniel Reagan
March 12, 1953 - February 15, 2025
Palo Alto, California
Interment of Cremated Remains:
Residence
Stephen Daniel Reagan, 71, of Mountain View, California, passed away on February 15, 2025.
At 6-feet 5-inches tall, Steve was a true BIG brother to John (Jewel) Reagan, Jim (Tana) Reagan, and Elizabeth (Gregg) Milo. He was predeceased by brother Mike Reagan, and our parents, Jim and Gloria Reagan.
Steve was an ultra-marathon runner, competing in the Western States Endurance Run 100-mile race three times, and completing it on his third attempt. In the following years, Steve trained with and helped other runners achieve success in that challenging race. He loved running on the trails around his home, and cherished the relationships he made with his many running buddies. These were some of the best times of his life, and these friends became his California family.
He loved fine wines, stately clocks, and music of all genres. A particular favorite was French jazz singer Zaz, who sent personal notes to him in his (many!) CD purchases. Steve’s passion was travel, and he visited and often joined races in faraway places like Mongolia, China, Hawaii, and all throughout Europe. He met his former wife, Cecilia, during his international travels, and while their marriage wasn’t meant to be, they enjoyed a lasting life-long friendship.
Steve’s favorite place was France, and while he enjoyed times spent in Paris, it was the community of Avignon that he loved best. He shared many bottles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine blend from that region, and his gifts of fine wine became a Christmas tradition. He particularly enjoyed helping bottle fine wines from his friends’ local R & W Winery, gifting the wine he’d helped bottle, and proudly wearing the t-shirts celebrating the bottling events.
Steve was an avid photographer, which was lucky for all of us because he shared his beautiful travel photos with family and friends. Many of these remain in his Facebook account as a testament to his sense of adventure.
While living and traveling far from family, Steve was a family man at heart. He was a frequent visitor to Florida when our parents were residents, and kept in close contact with his siblings. We each have favorite tales that we were able to recite to him at the end of his time here on earth. We will cherish these memories, and rejoice in new ones so generously shared by his friends.
Special thanks to Redwood Hospice, Palo Alto Commons, Mike Scoggin of Inspired Senior Advisors, and all who made his final journey easier. The most inspiring of brothers, Steve showed tremendous courage and grace in the face of his illness. We are fortunate for his example, and will celebrate now that he is freed from the bonds of Parkinson’s Disease, and running his greatest races in heaven.
Services will be held in Florida in the spring, and we are planning to spread his ashes on the running trails that he loved so much near his home. Please remember our brother Steve with a prayer, a kindness to others, and a great glass of burgundy.

Soledad’s parents Manuel Jara and Pillar Flores had four other babies–Trinidad, Guadalpe, Jose de Jesus, and Maria de Los Angeles–who all died within months of their births. Soledad was the fifth child and lone survivor, until the sixth and final baby Esther, six years Soledad’s junior. Soledad’s birth and survival was perhaps a sign that her life might be different, and that her fate in rural MX was not simply resigned to misfortune.
Born on Sept. 8, 1934, Soledad Jara Flores lived in Villa Guerrero, Jalisco, MX. The young Jara family began in La Mora, a farmstead likely around 3-5 hectares, roughly 2-3 miles on the Villa Guerrero outskirts and a 45 minute walk into town. The farm provided a bounty of crops that sustained them and provided a modest income. Manuel Jara was industrious, mastering crafts, business and even veterinary services. Pillar was equally industrious in both teaching her daughters valuable life skills – creating a well-managed and supportive home for the family, and often, feeding the neighbors who suffered food instability.

La Mora became a hub for social gathering amidst the relentless work. Pillar was instrumental in instilling deeply foundational values that would shape her daughters’ lives. These memories defined Soledad’s core of her being, the comforting routines of family, agricultural seasons, devout religious observance, and the anticipation life would remain joyful in this serene cycle.
Soledad Flores Jara married Luis Sandoval Jara on Dec. 26, 1956 at 22 and the newlyweds moved to Palo Alto, CA, in mid-1957. What ensued was a familiar, deeply personal journey, transitioning from simple village existence to “American” life.
PALO ALTO 1957-1962; MOUNTAIN VIEW 1962-2023:
Soledad married Luis and left the sheltered small town world. Leaving the Villa was frightening for her, but yearly visits to MX strengthened familial bonds.
They arrived in Palo Alto in September 1957, with just the two suitcases they carried and much faith in their decision. Luis almost immediately secured two jobs and worked 12-hour days, again saving for their own apartment and later, their first home. Their first apartment was nearly barren– they slept under cardboard while slowly acquiring some modest furniture.
Soledad and Luis welcomed their first son, Francisco Javier in November of 1957, then Luis Jr (Lou) in 1959, and Ricardo (Ric) in 1960. The Jaras had their first three children within 5 years. Soledad slowly learned to navigate public life, and develop her emerging bilingual language skills.

Later, Soledad gave birth to David Patricio (1964), Jose Vicente (1965) and Felipe Octavio (1969), establishing the family of six boys as noteworthy within the neighborhood. Luis & Soledad taught the Jara sons to work, earn and save. The boys internalized these lessons in life, with paper routes and multiple part-time jobs, which taught valuable life experiences.
In 1962, Luis and Soledad settled in Mtn. View, CA, in a modest home which nurtured children and grandchildren for over 50 years. Luis lived in the family home until his death November 26, 2011 – the day after Thanksgiving. The Jaras enjoyed many friendships, and their life echoed the mythic American dream canonized by Leave It To Beaver.
SOLEDAD JARA BEYOND DOMESTIC LIFE:
Soledad in 1977 emancipated herself from providing “free” childcare for neighbors. She snuck down the street and applied for a cafeteria position at Crittenden Middle School, just 3-4 blocks and 8 minutes walking time from the Jara homestead. She didn’t reveal her application nor ask permission, she simply made the executive decision she wanted a change.
The next day as Luis was again prepping for a day shift, he answered the phone and was stunned to discover the school had offered Soledad the job. After some brief discussion, Luis quickly agreed and Soledad began her work life outside of the home. Soledad became iconic as one of the “lunch ladies” who demonstrated kindness to the children and efficiency to her colleagues. For the first time, she had a job outside of the home, and defined a change in her worldview. She enjoyed the work, made friends with coworkers, and created an identity beyond Mrs. and Mom. She worked for the school district for approximately 12 years, until a work injury ended her venture. Soledad recalled with great relish the excitement of earning income, supporting their sons, and enjoying the rewards of their ambition and ganas.
SILICON VALLEY HOME OWNERSHIP:
![]() |
Soledad (far left) and colleagues, circa 1977 |
Luis and Soledad helped finance and secure a shared property on Rengstorff Avenue where the the older Jara sons were young adults, could live and begin developing their credit histories. Over their lifetime, Luis and Soledad helped each of their six sons buy their first homes, which was an accomplishment for both the former farm girl and bartender supporting a family of eight on service industry wages.
THE JARA FAMILY NETWORK:
Over the years Soledad and Luis worked to preserve The Jara family network with extended family–cousins, aunts and uncles–settled nearby in SF, Monterey, Castroville-Salinas, Modesto and other areas. Though time, distance, and work-life similar demands have impacted family bonds, their connections are potent reminders of the importance of family and cultural roots.
Her last visit to MX, in 2007, was deeply joyful, defined by the time spent with aunts, uncles, cousins who were steadfast despite the geographic separation. The Villa was still remarkable in its smallness but the reward was bountiful, as Soledad and Esther reunited. The two sisters had lived through separation and distance, parental loss, children, economic hardship and worry, yet the moment was pure joyfulness beyond words. They had endured and prospered despite the different paths, and they celebrated their unshaken bonds.
Luis and Soledad celebrated Christmas in MX Esther and Aureliano, great-nieces and nephews. This evening was the last time the sisters and families gathered and celebrated together, but the memory of that experience still comforts.
Soledad leaves behind her sons and grandchildren with treasured memories and insight, MX traditions, and gratitude for her gift of life.
Kay Ann Arrillaga
December 10, 1936 - February 7, 2025
Monterey, California
Interment:
Madronia Cemetery,
Saratoga, CA
Heaven gained a beautiful angel with the passing of Kay Ann Arrillaga. She was born on December 10, 1936, in Shepherd, Michigan to Edwin Crampton and Lois Hicks. Kay spent those early years growing up in Shepherd. Shortly after, she moved with her mother, Lois and older brother, Gary to Southern California. Kay and Gary shared a special brother-sister relationship throughout their lifetime and were always there for each other. Gary made Kay laugh all the time. Kay attended elementary school and junior high school in Santa Monica and spent a lot of time at the beach with her best friend, Suzanne and her brother during the summers. Kay became a beauty queen and flag girl at Santa Monica High School. She was always a very good student and went to Santa Monica Community College before going on to attend UCLA where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in early childhood education on June 12, 1958. She had a special gift teaching young children and was a fantastic Kindergarten teacher for many years. She was a good athlete and was a very good surfer and water skier as a young woman. While she was at UCLA she met her soul mate, Gabriel Arrillaga “Gabe” who was going to the University of California on a basketball scholarship. Kay and Gabe eventually eloped and got married in Las Vegas alongside their good friends, Denny and Arlene Bertelsman. Kay and Gabe had a short but incredible life together and had three children. The family initially lived in Torrance, California and went to the beach and on camping trips all the time. Kay would organize amazing birthday parties for her young children and always baked a birthday cake based upon the theme of the party. Kay, Gabe and their children would move to Saratoga, California when the boys were in elementary school. Life was centered around the boys sporting teams with Gabe coaching and Kay organizing all the team schedules, events and parties. Gabe unfortunately passed away at the early age of 39. Kay was an incredible mother who made a lot of sacrifices in her life and amazing commitment to raise her three young boys all by herself in Saratoga.
Kay would later marry Allen C Dyer and move to Carmel, California. When Allen passed away years later Kay remained in Carmel. Kay would spend the remainder of her life enjoying family and friends in Monterey County. She was very generous with her time and had a great influence on her community. She became a wonderful volunteer for many years for both Hospice and the Suicide Prevention Center in Monterey County. Kay won numerous volunteer awards for her incredible service to those helpful community organizations. Kay also became an entrepreneur and started a company called “Happy to be Me” with her good friend Arlene Bertelsman which focused on women’s personal happiness.
Kay was also an incredible grandmother to her grandchildren. She would always take them out on special outings to the beach, park, Monterey Aquarium and other places. Kay always did something special for each grandchild on their birthday. Special times were spent with Kay and her grandchildren during the holidays, and she always had the perfect gift for each grandchild. Kay loved to watch the grandchildren whenever one of her children and their spouse went on a trip by themselves.
Kay always loved Lake Tahoe and owned a house there for a long time where she shared many wonderful memories with her three boys and their families and all her friends. Those shared memories included boating, going to the beach, going to the community pool, walking, hiking, sledding, miniature golfing, snow skiing, ping pong, tennis, outdoor movies, having big dinners and playing cards and board games at night after dinner at the dinner table. Kay’s favorite game was Yahtzee and she would continue to play it throughout her later years in life.
Kay loved listening to music at her house in Carmel and her favorite singer of all time was Barbara Streisand. Her favorite movie was “The Sound of Music” and she would watch it whenever it came on television. Katy’s Place in Carmel was her favorite place to have breakfast where she would usually order the Swedish Pancakes. Graysing’s was her favorite place to have a hamburger at lunch before walking through the Carmel Park. Kay was a great cook, and her signature dishes were homemade pizza, beef rigatoni, cheese souffle and tuna casserole. She was also famous for her chocolate chip cookies, garlic bread, pumpkin muffins and for the big Thanksgiving Dinners she would make in Carmel every year for her children and grandchildren. Walking was by far Kay’s favorite activity during the day while living in Carmel. Kay walked every single day. She loved to walk through downtown Carmel, through the neighborhoods of Carmel and on the Carmel Beach with family and friends.
Kay was a beautiful person on both the inside and outside. She was one of the most positive people ever put on this earth and that positivity rubbed off on everyone that was around her. Kay was kind, generous, honest, a good listener and had a lot of integrity. She had a great smile, a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh at her own jokes. Kay always accepted everyone for who they were. Friendships were very important to her. She had a very close circle of friends from high school, college and from the Saratoga, Carmel and Lake Tahoe communities she lived in. She was incredibly reliable and loyal to all of her friends. Kay would organize many of the barbecues, dinner parties, birthday parties and other events with her different groups of friends. She loved to travel, snow ski in Lake Tahoe, go for long walks and go to musical and theatrical shows with her friends.
Family always came first to Kay. Kay’s greatest gift in life was that she was the guardian angel of her main family nucleus and her extended family. She was not only an incredible mother and grandmother but a wonderful sister, daughter, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law and aunt. Kay was the member of the family that everyone came to for advice, wisdom, help and for a positive boost of confidence and wellbeing in their life. Kay always had time for family and was available anytime someone needed her. Kay will be dearly missed by her family and friends. We should all have comfort knowing she has been reunited with Gabe in a different place.
Kay is survived by her three children, Randy, Jeff & Brady; her daughters-in-law, Debbie, Susan & Kelly; and her seven grandchildren, Melissa, Kyle, Lindsey, Jamie, Sydney, Shea & Chase. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Hospice Giving Foundation in Monterey (hospicegiving.org) in memory of Kay Arrillaga.

It is with deep sadness and hope in the resurrection that the Diocese of San Jose announces the passing of Reverend Father Reynaldo Sarmiento, who returned to the Lord on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, after a courageous seven-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving sisters and priest friends.
Fr. Reynaldo was born on October 4, 1967, in Manila, Philippines. He was the youngest of five children and the only son of his late parents, Conrado (+November 6, 2016) and Encarnacion (+October 1, 2024).
Before embracing his vocation to the priesthood, Fr. Reynaldo had a successful career in the hospitality industry. He worked as manager in esteemed establishments such as Dusit Thani Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and TGIF Restaurant in Manila. His professional path included training in Hong Kong and Texas, preparing him for his leadership roles. Known for his radiant smile, exceptional singing voice, and passion for service, Fr. Reynaldo was admired for his dedication and warmth.
Fr. Reynaldo’s family and friends remember him for his charismatic personality, generosity, and profound gratitude. A man of deep compassion, he had a special place in his heart for the homeless, often going out of his way to feed those in need.
Even before entering the seminary, Fr. Reynaldo displayed his devotion to God through his prayer life, regular Mass attendance, and service as a choir soloist at Saint Elizabeth Parish in Milpitas. His vocational journey led him to join the Carmelite Order in San Jose before discerning diocesan priesthood. He later entered St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park and was ordained a priest on June 7, 2014.
During his 10 years of ministry, Fr. Reynaldo faithfully served the Diocese of San Jose with joy, dedication, and a servant’s heart. His kindness, humility, and unwavering faith touched the lives of many parishioners, friends, and colleagues. He was Parochial Vicar at Queen of Apostles Church in San Jose, Church of the Ascension in Saratoga and Saint Frances Cabrini Church in San Jose. He also served as Pastor of Saint Francis of Assisi Church in San Jose.
He is survived by his beloved sisters: Sailani Morales (Edgardo+), Estelita De Guzman (Eric), Ruth Perez (Jake), and Flordeliza Consolacion (Boyet), as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless parishioners who were blessed by his ministry and friendship.
Services will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025 with a public viewing from 3-5:30pm followed by a Prayer Service with eulogies at 5:30pm and Funeral Mass at 7pm at Saint Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 15333 Woodard Rd, San Jose.
