Steven Del Grande

Steven Michael Del Grande
April 12, 1963 - April 11, 2024
Manteca, California

Funeral Service: Saturday, May 4, 2024, 11:00 AM at Foxworthy Baptist Church, San Jose, CA
Interment of Cremated Remains: Residence

Steven Michael Del Grande (60) of Manteca, CA, passed away in a tragic accident on April 11, 2024, when an oncoming car suddenly made an illegal U-turn directly into the path of his Harley Davidson motorcycle as he was riding home from work. His family is profoundly saddened over this unexpected loss.

Steve was born in San Francisco, CA on April 12, 1963 to parents David and Colleen. In 1970 the family moved to the South Bay Area (Cupertino then San Jose) where Steve played Little League baseball, rode dirt bikes, and got into plenty of mischief with a legion of neighborhood friends. He graduated from Blackford High School in San Jose in 1981, and went on to study at community college before beginning his long successful career in all things mechanical, machining, fabrication, precision tooling assembly and testing.

In January 1991, Steve welcomed his only son, David Michael, who grew to become Steve’s best friend. Together they shared a love of motorcycles, boating, fishing, sports, and more. Steve was thrilled to share these passions with his cherished new grandsons Clayton Michael (35 months) and Chance Cameron (12 months). He was such a proud papa who loved to brag about these boys, and held great admiration for their mother, Morgan Bridgman, David’s partner.

At work, Steve excelled at systems troubleshooting, building prototypes, and creating tools for industries ranging from nuclear power to national defense. He developed and contributed his expertise at NASA/Ames - Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman, SLAC/SRI, GE, and Primus Power, before ultimately landing a dream job in 2021 at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, building and tearing down important systems for our national defense. As a Senior Mechanical Technologist within the Defense Technology Engineering Group, he supported Strategic Deterrence and Weapons Technology Programs.

He was very happy after buying his first home in Manteca, where he loved to wrench on cars and motorcycles in his vast garage. His friends say he was a brilliant mechanic and could often be found tuning Harleys by ear.

Steve enjoyed classic rock, southern rock, and blues, and loved attending concerts of artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Cray, and Jonny Lang. He was a faithful fan of the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, and San Jose Sharks. Throughout his life, he loved to watch games with his dad, Nonno, and son, and for a couple of decades hosted a weekly fight-night tradition with many of his good friends.

Steve was a devoted and loving son who called his mother daily with the greeting, “Hello my beautiful mother.” He possessed a warm and genuine smile with an infectious laugh that will be greatly missed.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, David Michael Frank Del Grande, and is survived by his mother Colleen Ann Whitney, son David Del Grande, grandsons Clayton and Chance, brother Chris Del Grande, sisters Deanna Broussard and Tara Del Grande, step-mother Kathy Del Grande, and loyal dog Tessie.

His departure comes as a shock and great wound that is deeply felt by his entire family and countless friends who loved him dearly.

Services will be held May 4, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Foxworthy Baptist Church located at 1774 Foxworthy Ave, San Jose, CA 95124. The service will be followed by a Celebration of Life picnic at Almaden Lake Park in the South Point Picnic Area, located near the east entrance at 5949 Winfield Blvd, San Jose, CA 95118

He will be remembered for his remarkable soul, kindness, smile, and generosity. He was a great listener with a razor-sharp mind, and we could always count on his impeccable memory to recall dates and names that we couldn’t recall.

He was a maestro of melody who strummed the strings and keys of both guitar and accordion with passion. Home was his sanctuary, where his singing filled every room and the news of MSNBC, or the timeless tales of his beloved westerns rang throughout. Nothing brought him more joy than receiving Snapchats from his grandchildren, each image a glimpse into their world, followed by a text message or call that never failed to light up his face with his infectious smile.

Ismael is reunited with his beloved wife of 50 years, Marge Robledo; son, Manuel Robledo; and his sweet Schnauzer, Reina in heaven.

Sylvain Hossay Sylvain Hossay

Sylvain Joseph Hossay
November 11, 1936 - March 14, 2024
Colfax, California

Graveside Service: Tuesday, April 2, 2024, 11:00 AM
Interment: Los Gatos Memorial Park, San Jose, CA

Born in Belgium, Sylvain was the youngest boy of fourteen children in a humble farm family. The Hossay family endured war, occupation and postwar uncertainty together, with perseverance, compassion and a kindness that would shape Sylvain deeply.

He married Lea Seffer and they boldly chose to move to the South Bay in 1959. The young couple struggled, with Sylvain working any odd job he could find to support his family, from unloading freight cars to selling brushes door-to-door, all while trying to learn a bit of English when he could. In fact, Sylvain’s commitment to his family, willingness to work hard, and kindness to others would be character hallmarks throughout his life.

He landed a job with Green Valley Disposal in the early 1960s and worked for the company for four decades, while helping to raise his two children, and building a broad network of friends and a reputation for kind-heartedness and an unending readiness to help a friend.

He grew to become a gentile and generous patriarch of a growing family, and a remarkable source of love, kindness and support in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dedicated to soccer as a young man, he enjoyed sports throughout his life and cheered for the Giants, 49ers, Warriors, and Manchester United with enthusiasm. He enjoyed gardening and had a well-known green thumb.

He is survived by his daughter Brigitte, his son Patrick, daughter-in-law Sheri, grandchildren Ricky and Brandi, grandson-in-law Joseph, granddaughter-in-law Kathy, and greatgrandchildren Kyah, Niko, Glenda, Kingston, Athena, and Lea.

Stephen Quigley

Stephen Timothy Quigley Jr
September 22, 1945 - March 15, 2024
San Jose, California

Visitation: Wednesday, April 10, 2024, 01:00 PM to 02:30 PM at St Christopher Catholic Church, San Jose, CA
Funeral Mass: Wednesday, April 10, 2024, 02:30 PM at St Christopher Catholic Church, San Jose, CA
Interment: Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA

Stephen Timothy Quigley, Jr. died March 15, 2024 at the age of 78 after a long illness. Known to all as “Tim”, he was a beloved father, brother, uncle, son, & friend. Service – to his family, community, country, and by working to build peaceful connections between nations – defined his life.

Born September 22, 1945 in Wabasha, Minnesota to Stephen T. Quigley, Sr. and the former Catherine Langdon Foley, Tim earned his Eagle Scout award in 1959. He attended Cretin High School in St. Paul where he completed the junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program and received a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy from Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey.

After graduating in 1967, Tim embarked on a nearly 30-year Naval career. He was certified as a P3 pilot and conducted surveillance operations around the Pacific Rim as a member of several patrol squadrons, including VP-1, VP-50, and VP-47. With VP-1 he served three combat tours during the Vietnam War. It was as a young pilot that Tim first found his way to San Jose, the city that would become his adopted hometown for nearly half a century.

His senior military leadership roles included squadron commander for VP-47, Executive Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of NATO Forces Southern Europe and Naval Forces Europe, Commanding Officer at Moffett Field Naval Air Station, and Director of Strategic Planning and Policy for the Department of the Navy. Along with numerous military honors, Tim completed an executive management certification course from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and served as course president for the NATO Defense College in Rome. After retiring from the Navy at the rank of Captain in 1994, Tim returned to San Jose to embark on his next semester of life.

As a corporate and non-profit executive, Tim served as President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Defense/Space Consortium, Managing Director & CEO of the Silicon Valley Global Trading Center, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Silicon Valley, and Program Director of Green Challenge California. He later served as Chairman and CEO of Azores TV and NPG Multimedia. In addition to his business interests, Tim maintained active community involvement by volunteering as a board member for the San Jose Symphony and the San Jose Police Foundation, was a member of the Rotary, and found his greatest passion by serving on the board of the San Jose/Dublin Sister City Program.

His experiences being stationed internationally during his military service inspired a strong belief in the role of citizen diplomacy to foster peace through economic, social, and cultural connections among people from different countries. As a board for the San Jose/Dublin program, he participated in every San Jose delegation visit to Dublin since 1999 and led efforts to create the Pat McMahon Masters Level Scholarship program. Since its establishment in 2012, the McMahon scholarship now provides an academic exchange internship for students at San Jose State University and Dublin City University. In 2019 he was honored for his work with the Spirit of Ireland Award from the San Jose/Dublin Sister City Program.

Tim grew his involvement in citizen diplomacy by also serving as President of Sister Cities International and the Sister Cities International Foundation, which he helped to create. In those roles he led citizen delegations to countries around the world and, working from the belief that deeper integration can diffuse conflict, he was particularly proud of his efforts to foster connections with some of the United States’ political rivals, particularly cities within China and Russia.

Over the course of his tenure, he helped to established many new sister city relationships and was Chair of the 2014 International Sister Cities Annual Conference Host Committee. In 2022 he received the Foreign Minister’s Commendation from the Consul General of Japan in San Francisco for his contributions to building connections between cities in the United States and Japan.

A fourth generation Irish American, Tim held deep pride in his heritage and the strong sense of family that his large Irish clan instilled in him. He relished big family reunions and weddings, ski trips to Lake Tahoe with his children, and his annual “Christmas in the Park” family holiday celebration.

His outgoing social nature seemed to have no limits. Tim never met a waiter he didn’t want to know on a first name basis, or a city councilmember that he didn’t want to talk to about the benefits of a new sister city arrangement. He accomplished a great deal, but always maintained that his greatest pride came from his family.

Tim is survived by his partner of more than 20 years, Tsuyoshi Hashimoto of Kumamoto Japan, his daughter Ashley Jardine of Oakland, CA; sons Aaron Quigley (Jenny) of San Jose, CA; Nathan Quigley (Corinne) of San Francisco, CA; and Joshua Quigley (Tracy Gondo) of Oakland, CA; his siblings Cathy (Ray) Wicks of Woodbury, MN; Mary (John) Stevens of Marshalltown, IA; Eileen Quigley of Silver Spring, MD; Kevin (Camie) Quigley of South St. Paul, MN; John Quigley of Eagle Rock, CA; his seven grandchildren and his great-grandson. He was previously married to Mary Lynn Ashburn of Sonora, CA.

A Catholic funeral mass will be held at the St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in San Jose. Internment with military honors will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are appreciated the Pat McMahon Scholarship Program or the Sister Cities International Foundation.

Alberto Avendano Alberto Avendano Alberto Avendano

Adalberto Avendaño II
April 14, 1972 - January 23, 2024
Belmont, California

Visitation: Tuesday, February 6, 2024, 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM at San Jose Funeral Service, San Jose, CA
Graveside service to follow.
Interment: Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, CA

Adalberto “Alberto” Avendaño passed away January 23rd, 2024 in San Mateo, California at the young age of 51 years old. Alberto was born on April 14, 1972 to Adalberto and Rosaura Avendaño in Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Alberto is survived by his loving mother, five siblings, two sons Andrew (Katie) Avendaño, Anthony (Jenna) Avendaño, and his two grandchildren Lennon and Elias Avendaño.

Alberto’s life was centered around the importance of family and the simple pleasures of life. He found his greatest joy in being a loving father and grandfather. His love for his sons was immeasurable, and his pride in them and their accomplishments was evident. In addition to his role as a father, he was beyond ecstatic when he became a grandfather to Lennon and Elias. His face would light up with joy, love, and happiness at the mere mention, thought, or sight of his grandkids. He always adored and had a soft spot for children. He loved his nieces and nephews and treated them like his own children as well.

He will be missed by his family very much. His mother and siblings will hold him forever in their hearts and remember him for the funny character that he was. He always made everybody laugh and was a joy to be around. He was cared for dearly and his mother Rosaura will tremendously miss the presence of her first-born son, who she was always very close with. Alberto was also very close with his father Adalberto, who tragically passed away when Alberto was six years old. After Adalberto’s passing, Alberto and his family immigrated to San Francisco from Sinaloa. Alberto always held his father in loving memory, and the family knows they are now both resting in peace together.

Alberto loved all things Elvis, dogs (especially his Rottweilers Zeus and Haus), barbequing, and the Dallas Cowboys. He worked as a contractor for over 30 years and was talented in painting and construction. He took a lot of pride in everything he did, whether it was for family, friends, clients, or even strangers, he was always respectful and did everything with care. He was very humble and would give the shirt off his back for anyone whether he knew them or not.

Alberto will also be missed by his friends (who became family) over the years and who he shared multiple hobbies with. Some of the many things they enjoyed together included: camping, dirt biking, wakeboarding, and snowboarding.
