Mary Tafarella Mary Tafarella

Mary Toshiko Tafarella
September 24, 1924 - September 28, 2019
San Jose, California

Graveside Service: Thursday, October 3, 2019, 12:30 PM.
Interment: Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery,

The light of our lives, Mary Toshiko Walker Tafarella, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2019 at the age of 95 years in Campbell. Mary was born on September 24, 1924 in Nagasaki, Japan. She will be forever missed by her loving daughter, Sarina A. Tafarella-Gonzales; her oldest son, Peter A. Tafarella; her son-in -law, Robert J. Gonzales; her step-brother, Denis Walker and his wife, Noriyo Walker; and many whose lives were touched by knowing her.

The Walker Family home Is in Nagasaki, Japan, and is part of the Glover Estate Complex, which is a nationally recognized tribute to the first European settlers who established Nagasaki as an international port of call in the 1800's.

Mary was one of the very few, but very fortunate survivors of the 1945 Atomic bombing of Nagasaki. This traumatic experience left her with emotional and physical scars that remained with her the rest of her life.

Her strict, but disciplined early schooling at a Catholic Convent run by French nuns helped her to develop a mastery of foreign language, and she became fluent in French, Japanese, and English.

Her language skills served her well during and after the war. After Japan's surrender in 1945 she was called upon to act as a translator between the U.S. military Occupational Forces and the Japanese. It was during this time that she met Army Master Sgt Tony Tafarella who worked for the U. S. Army Intelligence Department. They were married after a long courtship, and Tony's career in the military required them to travel between the U.S. and Japan for over 20 years, until they settled in San Jose in 1968. They raised four children together.

Mary would survive the heart wrenching loss of her beloved husband, Tony; as well as the death of her youngest daughter, Patricia; and the untimely death of her youngest son, Michael.

She would spend the remainder of her life in preferred, quiet solitude. She kept herself busy with activities that she enjoyed like reading, writing, studying language, history, politics, poetry, ceramics and painting, floral arranging, cooking, and gardening.

She was a loving, gentle and very kind human being and was devoted entirely to her family. She asked for nothing, gave tirelessly to others needs, and was always there to lean on......she was our guiding light and our beacon of hope. She was strong, courageous, determined, and always there to support us in any endeavor. She was a survivor and a true believer. She was a rare and precious jewel with unlimited brilliance and her light will shine forever in our hearts.

We pray that she will be reunited with all those beloved ones who departed before her and that she will have everlasting joy and happiness, and peace, until we meet again.

A quiet, private, graveside ceremony was held in her honor on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Los Altos

Mutsuko Iwatate

Mutsuko Ukegawa Iwatate
April 10, 1920 - August 31, 2019
Santa Clara, California

Interment of Cremated Remains: Oak Hill Memorial Park, San Jose, CA.

At the spring flower age of 99, Mutsuko Ukegawa Iwatate left this life to the next where her husband, Hideo, son, Robert, and many other family and friends were patiently awaiting her arrival. I’m sure the party has definitely started.

Mutsuko, otherwise known as Bachan, was not an overly sentimental person but showed her love and care in actions and gestures. Her life was long and filled with more history than a National Geographic documentary. She was pocket sized. Short and little but with a mighty personality that couldn’t be ignored. It would go against her wishes to lament and focus on her passing so instead, we shall send her off with love and memories of a life well lived.

Bachan was born, Mutsuko Ukegawa, in the US in 1920. She left to live in Japan for 8 years and years after her return home, was sent to live in Internment camps during WW2. Her flair for theatrics and singing placed her on the small stage in the camps and propelled her popularity amongst the interned. Her status as an interned did not stop her from finding her life’s love and partner. She married Hideo Iwatate in 1944 in Philadelphia. They had 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

She was a tough, hardworking, no nonsense fighter. She was a diligent farmer, an amazing cook, a gorgeous seamstress and she could knit and crochet amazing creations with her eyes closed. Bachan was “yancha”, rowdy, outspoken and always spoke her mind without a filter, shrinking delicate dispositions as she went. When she was a farmer, 2 young men stole her truck from the farm and she followed them and made them bring it back. No fear. Bachan drove a car like she was out of a Dukes of Hazzards episode. She had the care of her grandchildren and jumped the small hill the railroad tracks were on at such a speed that the car went airborne and landed with such force, it caused the kids in the car to cheer and request a repeat to which she replied, “shut up, shut up, don’t tell your parents”.

She did not finish high school so that she could work and allow her younger siblings to complete school, but she read like a scholar and her intelligence could not be denied. She was a living public safety announcement against cooking and napping, having caught the house on fire 3 times but her delicious cooking and ability to mop smoke stains from the ceiling eased the pain of repair expenses.

Bachan had no concept nor did she have the ability to recognize the embarrassment of others. One cannot forget the notorious sausage/weenie incident of 2003, where at a rehearsal dinner, Bachan and Irene dueled with forks over the authorized chicken and unauthorized “weenie”. The evil cackle that was spent from bachan alerted everyone that she had won said battle.

In her 80’s she could still elicit a honked horn while she bent over to pick crab grass out of the ground and she would still challenge anyone who dared to bother her family. No child was safe from her discipline within her scope of reach. There were always other kids living in the house and they too got to experience having a one-of-a-kind bachan while they lived alongside her and her family.

She loved to party and played poker with the best of them. She would have late Hana poker nights with the ladies representing the Japanese Animal House. Fun times were had with those ladies even if the roads were not safe with their driving.

She refused to be old, even when her mind and body refused to cooperate. She remained yancha, a fighter, a troublemaker. My Bachan was vibrant and stormy, loud and loving, tough and talented, harsh and persevering. She sailed through the rough seas of life, and drifted through the calm waters and traveled through her life like a well versed sailor, a naughty pirate and a magical mermaid. May her next life be as full as this life and I hope to meet her again when I, too, have finished my life’s travels.

With love, your grand-daughter Anna

San Jose, California

Interment of Cremated Remains: Private.

Mabel Ann Nunn was born on December 1, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama to Lottie Mae Nunn and Ollie Stallworth Sr. From the moment this little crumb snatcher was born everyone could tell she had a special presence. Determination and tenderness blended with a sense of adventure.

Growing up in Alabama with her mother Lottie, her sisters Oryko and Henrietta, and bothers Arthur and Robert presented Mabel with many opportunities to develop her curious and loving nature. Times were not always easy but with the love and support of family, Mabel was able to grow into the strong, beautiful, and insightful woman we all came to love. Mabel always had a sense for family, and while a difficult choice, she decided to journey to Philadelphia to connect with her father and siblings Barbara, Cynthia, Mark, Sherry, Clarice, Carmen, Christelle, Patricia, Gregory, and Beatrice.

After graduating from High School in Alabama Mabel made a decision that would change her life. It was time to go to California and see what all the fuss was about. It was in California where she met her former spouse Aleroy Kennon. Together they had Aleroy, Jr. and Kimberly.

In the wake of her daughter Kimberly’s death, Mabel stepped up to raise her grandson Lamar Lee. Understanding the meaning of education she wanted to prove to her children and grandchildren that anyone could achieve their educational goals no matter the circumstances. With that in mind she resumed her education at De Anza College and San Jose State as an adult and graduated at age 48 with a bachelor degree in Social Work. Family, education, and leading a good, spiritual life were the pillars of Mabel's philosophy. She may not have always had much, but you could bet that she would help you even if all she could provide was advice and guidance.

She had a zest for life and looked forward to every chance to catch up with friends and family. She loved music, movies, and being by the ocean.

Her 76 years were full of life and love, and she will be missed by all the lives she touched.

Mabel passed away peacefully on June 22, 2019 in San Jose, CA. Mabel Ann Nunn will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her son, Aleroy; grandsons, Lamar, Markeem, and Christopher; great-grandchildren Theodore and Devin; sisters Henrietta, Oryko, Barbara, Cynthia, Sherry, Carmen, Christelle, Clarice, and Patricia; brothers Ollie and Mark; and her former spouse Aleroy Kennon; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and loved ones!

After Roy and Sara divorced, he met Loree (Dolores) Mulqueeney Castro who became the next woman of his dreams. They Wed in 1974, and he began life with Loree and her two daughters: Karen (Duffey) and Michele (Michael), both deceased. Roy & Loree were the party hosts extraordinaire. Graham Douglas Vincent Chloupek left us too early, unexpectedly, at the age of 69 on May 18, 2019.

Born January 9, 1950 and raised in Oakland, he ultimately resided in San Jose with his bride of almost 38 years, Patrice. He is missed by his adoring and wonderful children, Shannon & Nicholas, for whom he gave so much - soccer & baseball coach, boy scout leader, study & travel buddy.

Graham earned a BS in Engineering at UC Berkeley (Go Bears!). He got his MBA at Santa Clara University while beginning a lifelong career in technology at GTE Lenkurt, CA Microwave & Siemens (25 yrs). Known for his quiet brilliance, gregarious smile, goofy spirit, and warmth, he loved great wine, classic rock, stamps, the Sharks & Giants, and his tomato garden. With a need for speed he raced his green 1970 911 T Porsche for many decades, car #38 in Porsche Club of America. Proud to be part of the "Big Dogs", his passion for hiking was a major part of his life. One of his many proud moments was conquering Machu Picchu in Peru with Shannon!

A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, May 31 at 11am at Queen of Apostles, 4911 Moorpark Avenue, San Jose. As Graham loved his Hawaiian shirts, casual attire is encouraged. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to any cancer research organization.

Dimmitt, whom she met at a USO event shortly after WWII. They were married for 70 years prior to his passing in 2016. She had six kids and started the lifelong journey of parenting when she was 20 years old and had her last child at age 40. Her priority in life was first and foremost to be a good wife and mother. Her active parenting was soon followed by grandparenting and great-grandparenting. Family was everything to her. She looked forward to each and every holiday family gathering, each and every birthday, and life milestone. She was always joyful about the next event, and loved recapping the last event. One might say that her 92 years were full of life and love. She walked for the March of Dimes door to door through her neighborhood in the early 50's when her 5 year old and 3 year old boys lay in the hospital in isolation with polio during her young adulthood. Later in life she was a behind the scenes supporter of younger family members. Claudia Mae Dimmitt, always remembered, never to be forgotten.

Clyde Dimmitt.

Nancy traveled (1956-57) to West Germany to teach students on an American military base. While there, she met Victor Wright, a former U.S. Marine and fellow teacher. Nancy was bright, beautiful and a woman of faith. Victor, a Washingtonian, followed Nancy back to California. Once there, he converted to Catholicism and the two were married and raised five boys together.

Nancy went back to school and obtained a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from SJSU. She worked at Mission College as their Educational Transition Coordinator. She very much enjoyed the companionship of her friends who were members of "The Steel Magnolias" and "The Turtles." Nancy and Victor found time to travel the world together, visiting 6 of the 7 continents. They both enjoyed their time in the St. Basil's Couples Club at St Lucy's parish. They were also part-time "snowbirds" in Arizona during their retirement years before

Victor's passing in 2015.

Nancy leaves behind 5 beloved sons: Kenney (Terri), O'Neil (Theresa and twin daughters, Abigail and Annie), Coleman (Kelly and daughter, Kasey Marie), Karl and Shelby. She also leaves behind nieces, Siobhan Kenney and Erin Kenney; nephew, Jim Kenney and their families.

San Jose, California

Celebration of Life: Saturday, April 20, 2019, 10:30 AM at South Broadway Baptist Church, Pittsburg, KS, CA.
Graveside Service to follow.
Interment of Cremated Remains: Garden of Memories Cemetery, 149 S Highway 69, Pittsburg, KS 66762. Tel: 620-231-9235.

Juanita Jopp, 93, formerly of Pittsburg, KS, passed away on March 3, 2019 in San Jose, CA, with both her daughters by her side.

A Celebration of Life will be held at South Broadway Baptist Church in Pittsburg, KS on Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Moss officiating. The family will receive friends after the service, with burial to follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Juanita was born in Baxter Springs, KS on June 15, 1925, the daughter of Mabel Phillips Hardy and Clifford Hardy. She graduated from high school in Riverton, KS in 1942 as valedictorian and was hired as private secretary to the chief engineer during the building of the Jayhawk War Plant near Crestline, KS. She then worked in Ohio in the same capacity for Aluminum Co. of America, the first war plant to earn the Army-Navy E for excellence in war production.

Returning home, she continued her studies in business and finance at Pittsburg State University.

Juanita met her future husband, Ralph Jopp, in November 1943 while he was stationed at Camp Crowder near Neosho, MO. They were married at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, February 17, 1945 after his return from the war in the Pacific.

They resided in Baxter Springs, KS from 1949-1961. They had two daughters, Linda and Sherry. An accomplished seamstress, Juanita enjoyed sewing dresses for them throughout their school years. She never missed a school activity or sporting event of her children and grandchildren.

A Pittsburg resident from 1961 to 2015, she was employed by the Jones Department Store office for several years until the store closed in 1974. A devoted daughter, she provided support and care for her mother who lived in Joplin until her death in 1985.

Juanita was an active member of South Broadway Baptist Church where she participated in the women’s auxiliary and was a Bible School teacher. Memberships were held in the Farm Bureau, the American Business Women’s Association, the Christian Women’s Club, where she enjoyed her Bible study group, and the Sunflower Kiwanis Club. She formed a Sewing Circle of neighborhood friends which met for nearly 40 years. She also derived joy from being a Girl Scout leader and mentoring students at Lakeside School to help them become better readers.

Juanita’s abiding commitment was to the Mt. Carmel/Via Christi Auxiliary. She volunteered for 29 years and served 6500 hours as a Pink Lady in the Gift Shop.

Juanita loved to travel and was proud to visit all 50 states with her husband. They also drove across Canada several times. At age 70, she obtained her first passport and during the next decade traveled to Europe many times with her daughters, as well as taking Caribbean, Mediterranean and Alaskan cruises.

In 2015, Juanita moved to an independent senior living community near her daughter, Linda, in San Jose. Except for profoundly missing her Kansas family, she was able to enjoy life to the fullest until the end, maintaining an active interest in current events and engaging in the social life of her living community. She was devoted to her family, generous, courageous, and she made friends wherever she went.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, her parents, and a brother, Dr. Clifford Hardy. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Goytia of San Jose, CA and Sherry Turnbull and husband Mark of Pittsburg; a brother, Dr. Glenn Hardy of Fayetteville, AR; and a sister, Mary Blanchard of Santa Cruz, CA. Other survivors are three grandchildren, Valerie Turnbull Frounfelter and husband, Trevor, of Joplin, MO; Jared Turnbull and wife, Rebecca, of Pittsburg; and Chad Goytia and wife Sarah of Santa Cruz, CA; and 7 great-grandchildren: Jackson, Nolan, Hayden, Weston, and Channing Turnbull, and Landon and Scarlett Frounfelter; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be made to either the Mt. Carmel Foundation, PO Box 1173, Pittsburg, Kansas 66762; or to South Broadway Baptist Church, 1322 S. Broadway, Pittsburg, KS 66762.

Theodore Gehrke

Theodore Erskine Gehrke
April 1, 1939 - February 23, 2019
Santa Cruz Mountains, California

Interment of Cremated Remains: Private.

Ted was born in Portland, OR on April 1, 1939 to Leonard Henry Gehrke and Eugenia (Taylor) Gehrke. He spent his youth as an "Army brat" as his father was transferred around the US during World War II.

In his early adult years he lived in New York City and managed several emerging jazz and rock bands, their concerts and tours (US and Europe) and record albums. He married Elizabeth Turner in 1967 and in 1968 they moved to the SF Bay area. In 1972 he became the Student Union Program Board Advisor at San Jose State University, where he guided a student board on the booking and producing of music and other arts acts. He later ran the Student Union Art Gallery.

In 1981 he inaugurated, with Rick Bates and the Program Board, the San Jose State Fountain Blues Festival - now called the San Jose Fountain Blues and Brews Festival - which has had an (almost) continual annual run in downtown San Jose. He continued to be a very vocal and real supporter of San Jose State University and the City of San Jose.

He was an accomplished poet, an excellent golfer, and a contributing member of his Redwood Estates community where he and his family have lived for 46 years. One of his proudest successes as a member of RE Water Board was helping to stop part of the Santa Cruz mountains from logging.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; twin daughters, Lucia Arredondo and Sierra Gehrke; daughter Crystal Hoffman; and by his twin granddaughters, Evangeline "Eva" Belle Arredondo and Josephine "Josie" Jane Arredondo. On behalf of Ted and the family, to continue his legacy of the Fountain Blues and Brews Festival, remembrance donations can be made to the non-profit Festival at www.fountainblues.com. Also, please support this year's 38th annual event by attending Saturday, June 22nd, 2:00-8:00 PM at Cesar Chavez Park.

He will mostly be remembered as a mentor to young people, an enthusiastic promoter of all music and the arts, a raconteur, as well as a loving and devoted father and husband. Here was a man who truly reveled in his family, friends and community. A Memorial Gala is to take place Saturday, March 30. Please email Elizabeth at TedGmemory@gmail.com for details. Another special tribute/fundraiser will take place at a later date at the Poor House Bistro. Check www.fountainblues.com for details.

John Herman

John Alexander Herman
May 28, 1936 - January 14, 2019
Cupertino, California

Interment of Cremated Remains: Private.

John Alexander Herman (also known as Dr. John or “DJ”) passed away on Jan. 14th having spent his life committed to service while spreading wit, warmth, and exuberance to everyone he met. John was a graduate of Cornell University, NYU Medical School, and became a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, 78th USAF Hospital, Hamilton Air Force Base, CA. There he cared for wounded soldiers returning from Vietnam and found his calling to help others.

Recognizing the impending diabetes epidemic, John spent 25+ years at San Jose Medical Group as a practicing Physician of Internal Medicine and Endocrinology working extensively with Hispanic patients with diabetes. Summers were filled educating and treating diabetic children at Camp De Los Niños and Camp DJ at Sequoia Lake, named in his honor. And for three decades, John was an active Board member of the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara, fundraising and providing diabetes education programs to the local community.

John also taught at UCSF for 40 years as Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine, guiding hundreds of first-year medical students to provide comprehensive medical and emotional care to low income patients. And as a cancer survivor, John volunteered at Cancer CAREpoint sharing his compassion, care, and good humor to those in Silicon Valley touched by cancer.

In 2008, John was recognized by the California State Senate with a Lifetime Achievement and Service Award for his meritorious service to humanity.

John was passionate about gardening, enjoyed hiking with his best friend Frank, traveling the world with his wife Edna, painting, and spending time with his family.

John’s loving spirit will be carried on by his wife of 53 years, Edna Herman; daughter, Michelle Herman; daughter and son-in-law, Erica and Denis Baylor; and grandchildren, Michael Alexander and Jason John Baylor.
